Paraffin Bath Therapy
Heat therapy is often recommended for inflammatory conditions like arthritis, but providing consistent heat to your hands and feet can be challenging. Paraffin bath therapy allows the afflicted area to be surrounded in soothing heat to reduce inflammation and relieve pain.
At Icon Medical Centers in Miami, paraffin bath therapy is one of the many tools of our physical therapy team. If paraffin bath therapy has been recommended to treat your condition, call our Miami Chiropractic office at (305) 858-8845 today!
What Is a Paraffin Bath?
A paraffin bath, which is also sometimes referred to as a “wax bath,” is a small tub filled with paraffin wax that allows parts of your body to be submerged. In addition to their usefulness in treating medical conditions, paraffin baths are often used in a spa setting since they tend to soften skin and exfoliate.
The procedure when using a paraffin bath is for your Miami therapist to assist you in submerging the affected area into the wax and then removing it. This process is repeated until the area is coated with a layer of wax about 5 to 10 millimeters thick. The area is then wrapped with a material that keeps the heat in and allows the wax to remain in place undisturbed.
The wax that surrounds the area continues to radiate heat that soaks in and reduces inflammation and provides comfort. When the treatment is complete, your Miami physical therapist will help you peel off the waxy coating. Your joints and muscles will feel good, and often your skin will feel softer too.
