What Causes Whiplash?

Whiplash occurs when the muscles in your neck are extended beyond their normal range of motion because of a fast and violent back-and-forth motion of your head, which is often seen in a rear-end collision. Depending on a number of factors including the force of the motion and how far your muscles extended, your injury can range from minor to severe.

A minor whiplash may resolve itself in a week or two with rest, hot or cold therapy and anti-inflammatory medication, but a severe whiplash will require more intensive therapies to heal. Don’t take a chance; what seems like a minor injury could be more severe than you realize. If you are in an accident, call our Miami office today for an evaluation.

Whiplash isn’t just caused by car accidents either. Some of the other reasons people come to our Miami office for whiplash include:

  • Sporting injuries
  • Skiing accidents
  • Assault
  • Slip and fall accidents
  • Bicycling accidents

Since whiplash is often the result of an accident, insurance companies may be involved when seeking treatment. Our Miami office is experienced when it comes to working with insurance companies. If this is a concern for you, please call our Miami office, and we’ll discuss your unique situation.

Diagnosing Whiplash

Whiplash is often easy to identify based on the injury that caused it and the location and description of the pain. Your Miami doctor may require more tests to determine the extent of your injury, and these may include x-rays, CT scans or MRIs.

Treatment for Whiplash

Your treatment will vary based on a number of factors including the severity of your injury and the length of time that passed between the time the injury occurred and when you sought treatment. If you are in an accident that involves your neck, it’s very important to seek treatment with your Miami doctor quickly for prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Physical therapy is usually the primary focus when treating a neck injury like whiplash. It’s important to strengthen your muscles so that they can once again support the weight of your head comfortably. We will refer you to a Miami physical therapist so that they can devise a suitable treatment program for you.

Medications can make you more comfortable while you are pursuing your physical therapy program. Over-the-counter or prescription anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, and corticosteroids may all provide relief. If you are in severe pain or suffering from muscle spasms, an injection of a numbing agent like lidocaine may be helpful. Your Miami doctor will discuss these options with you to determine which is right for you.
