Trigger Point Injections for back pain, neck pain, & muscle pain

Trigger Point Injections for back pain, neck pain, & muscle pain

Trigger points occur when the muscle fibers in a particular spot become hyper-irritated, producing acute pain in a very specific location. A trigger point can develop when muscle fibers are torn in either a single injury or as the result of repeated small traumas such as often occurs with repetitive stress injuries. The damage to the muscle fibers results in extra stress being put on the muscle, manifesting as pain.

People may experience trigger points in different ways. A trigger point may show up as muscular or skeletal pain, or a patient may experience the trigger point as a migraine or other condition.

Along with massage techniques and other physical therapy options, an effective method of managing the pain of trigger points is with trigger point injections. The injection procedure is quick and can provide long-lasting sustained relief.

What Happens During a Trigger Point Injection?

The first step in providing relief from trigger points is to identify the trigger point itself. You may already have a good idea of where it is since the trigger point often manifests as a lump or a knot in the muscle fiber. Often, the pain caused by the trigger point is felt in the same area, but it is possible for the trigger point to create pain that is felt in a completely different part of the body.

Once the trigger point has been identified, our doctor will use a small needle to deliver a dose of anesthetic medication directly to the trigger point. The injection may also contain a dose of a corticosteroid, which helps to decrease swelling in the area. The injection process is fast, taking only minutes, and we can provide multiple injections to treat multiple trigger points if necessary.

While the medications can help treat the pain, it’s primarily the action of the needle during the injection that causes the changes in the trigger point. If you are sensitive to any of the medications used in the injection, we can use a dry-needle technique to provide you with relief.

Relief provided by trigger point injections can last for weeks and even months. It may be necessary to repeat the injection technique in the future, and we will discuss this with you.
