If you get into a car accident, there are specific things you must do to make certain everyone is secure and safe. There are also things you must do in order to follow the law and comply with your insurance process.

The following action steps will help guide you through important choices you need to make if you have been in a car accident, whether you were responsible for the car accident, or if you were just a victim.

Take note of your injuries

If you are injured and you believe it may be life-threatening, you must call 911 immediately and get to the emergency room for treatment. It’s vital that you put your health first above any other issues.

Even if you don’t feel like you’re too badly injured, it’s still important to visit a car accident clinic near Opa-Locka within 14 days to get your injuries assessed to comply with your insurance policy.

Check your passengers

Once you’ve checked if you are ok, be sure to check on your passengers. If your accident was a bad one and your passengers are stuck or badly injured, you should call 911 immediately. Only attempt to get passengers out of the car and to safety if they can do so and are fully awake. Don’t try to move an unconscious person; wait for the emergency services.

Get to Safety

Just because you were in an accident, it doesn’t mean that there won’t be more accidents to follow. In inclement weather such as fog, snow, or floods, it’s common for more cars to not see the accident until the last minute and to not be able to avoid joining the wreck.

If you can, get out and get to safety as far away from the car as possible. If you can help your passengers or those in the other vehicles, then do so only if it will not risk your life and do it as fast as possible.

Call 911

As soon as you are away from the accident and you are safe, call 911. If you can ask a bystander or witness to call 911 beforehand, then do so. Some accidents, such as small shunts or rear-ending may not require the emergency services, but most accidents will require a police report to be done.

Insurance companies will usually require a police report to be done before you can file a claim, so it’s important that you contact the police, whether it’s at the scene of the accident or as soon as it is safe and convenient to do so after the accident.

Warn other drivers

If you’ve been involved in an accident but you are not in a serious condition and your car is still running, switch off the engine and switch on your hazard warning lights to alert other drivers of a potentially dangerous situation. Make sure you get out of your car as soon as possible after an accident though and do not wait around afterward.

Exchange insurance details

It’s a legal requirement for you to swap insurance details if you have been involved in a car accident, especially if one of the parties is injured. Once you are safe and unlikely to come to any more harm, make sure you swap insurance details with the other driver.

Insurance details include:

  • Your full name and address (no nicknames) and that of the other driver
  • Your insurance provider and policy number and that of the other driver
  • Both yours and the other drivers’ license plate details

Other useful info to note:

  • The color and type of car (e.g. a black Mercedes SUV with Florida plates)
  • The area the accident happened
  • Any details you remember from the crash
  • Take any photos you can of the area, especially skid marks
  • Who did you think was driving the other car and a brief description (i.e., was it the man with brown hair or the woman with blonde hair?)
  • Any witness details, their full names and addresses, and a brief description of what they saw
  • A description of the driving conditions: was it foggy or snowy, rainy, or very bright sunshine?
  • Any other factors such as a pedestrian stepping into the road that may have distracted you or the other driver.

Don’t discuss fault

This may seem like an odd thing to mention but be clear that you will not discuss the fault of the accident with the other driver at this time. The main reason for this is that if you admit fault and it’s later easily proved that it wasn’t your fault, it’s very hard to take that back.

In an accident situation, you may be confused or in a state of shock, so never admit fault at the time leave that for the police and insurance companies to work out.
