The first step in providing relief from muscle knots is to identify the trigger point itself. You may already have a good idea of where it is since the trigger point often manifests as a lump or a knot in the muscle fiber. Often, the pain caused by the knotted muscle is felt in the same area, but it is possible for it to create pain that is felt in a completely different part of the body.

Once the muscle has been identified, our accident doctor will use a small needle to deliver a dose of anesthetic medication directly to the affected muscle. The injection may also contain a dose of a corticosteroid (a steroid medication), which helps to decrease swelling in the area. The injection process is fast, taking only minutes, and we can provide multiple injections to treat multiple muscle areas if necessary.

While the medications can help treat the pain, it’s primarily the action of the needle during the injection that causes the changes in the tissues that surround the muscles.

Once the patient receive the injection, they should be able to resume their daily activities as usual. The pain management doctor that administered the injection may recommend stretches, exercises, or rest to help minimize your pain and restore the musculature as needed. Your accident doctor will also advise you of the symptoms to watch for, which may indicate any complications.

Every patient is different and some may feel total relief within a few days of receiving the injection, while others may not feel any relief at all. Likewise, the duration of relief also varies from person to person.

The relief provided by the injection can last for weeks and even months. It may be necessary to repeat the injection technique in the future, and we will discuss this with you.
