Special weekends, or any other big weekend you have with your family, should be celebrated. They should not be something you dread because last year you threw out your back. You need to know how to prevent these injuries in the first place, and then know how to properly treat pain after that special weekend so that you can heal fast, heal correctly, and move on with your life without any prolonged symptoms.

How to Prevent Pain in the First Place

The first thing you need to know is how to prevent these injuries from occurring in the first place:

Stretch Before Physical Exercise

Stretching before physical exercise is essential. In fact, you should get into the habit of stretching regularly, to help keep your flexibility at its peak. As you age, your natural flexibility will naturally reduce, making it more difficult to do the things that you love. By stretching every day, you can keep full mobility throughout your life.

Warm Up and Cool Down

Never play a sport with your family without warming up and cooling down. This is the fastest and easiest way to hurt yourself. Don’t let any of your family members exercise without warming up and cooling down after as well. Nothing will stop a fun game faster than someone spraining a joint or tearing a ligament.

Don’t Over Exert Yourself

Another way you can hurt yourself is just by pushing yourself too hard. This will make your muscles fatigued and more prone to injury.

How to Deal with Pain

If you have already been injured, however, you will want to follow these suggestions. Even if you are anticipating a rowdy weekend away with the family, it is good to know these tips in case an injury does happen.

Hot and Cold Therapy

Ice compresses are great to reduce the swelling and should be used immediately after an injury. After a few days, you can switch to hot and cold therapy, or have a registered physician at Icon Medical conduct it for you for the best results. Essentially the goal is to reduce swelling, then to increase blood flow to improve circulation and healing.

Compression

Compression is another great treatment to use right after an injury, as it also helps keep the swelling down and can be used to reduce pain.

Physiotherapy

If you have suffered a serious injury, you will want to book an appointment with us so that you can have a full diagnosis conducted and physical therapy regimen created for your injury. We offer a variety of advanced treatments, including physiotherapy and chiropractic care in Miami, to help your body heal.

Anti-Inflammatory Medication

Anti-inflammatory pain killers should be used in small doses. Be wary of over-relying on them, however, as this can lead to addiction.

You deserve to play a game of catch, tag, or football with your family on a big get together weekend. You deserve to have fun. Just prepare your body in advance and if you still manage to sprain, strain, or hurt yourself in some way, then don’t worry. Follow the advice listed above and you will recover fast and well.

At Icon Medical Centers, we provide all the therapies listed above and much more to get all of our injured patients back to their healthy lives.
