Migraine Treatment

Are you living with painful migraines on a regular basis? While many people assume that a migraine is simply a particularly bad headache, anyone who has experienced a migraine attack knows that it is a far more serious condition and it can have a devastating effect on a person’s life if not treated.

Migraines affect around 12% of the population of America with almost a quarter of all households including someone with migraines. The pain and associated symptoms prevent more than 90% of those sufferers from being able to perform everyday tasks during an attack.

At Icon Medical Centers, we take the time to work with each individual to tailor a customized treatment plan for migraine sufferers. Contact us today to take back control of your pain and start living your life to the fullest.

Migraine Symptoms and Treatment

Migraine is a neurological condition often described as an intense and throbbing pain on one side of the head, but they can also present without head pain or with pain on both sides of the head. Migraines can be so painful that every year, over 1.2 million Americans visit the emergency room because of a migraine attack. Sufferers may also experience disturbed vision, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, tingling or numbness in the face, and sensitivity to sound, light and smells.

Some people experience retinal migraines, which are known for the aura the individual experiences before a migraine. An aura can be sensory and/or visual disturbances, such as a loss of vision, spots and flickering lines in vision, pins and needles, problems with speech and/or a feeling of weakness in the muscles. Visual auras typically last less than an hour, but the migraine itself can last between 4 and 72 hours.

Migraines can last for a few hours or even a few days in some cases, with people needing to take lots of rest in a dark and quiet environment. They can be extremely painful and when they occur on a regular basis, they will have a significant impact on a person’s ability to lead a fulfilling life or even to maintain steady employment.

The team at Icon Medical Centers, is committed to providing effective treatment for people who are living with debilitating migraines. Our migraine relief team is committed to finding the best treatment plan for every patient depending on their circumstances, other medical conditions, and symptoms.

What Causes Migraines?

While occasional migraines may be manageable with medication and rest, more than four million adults experience chronic migraine, i.e. migraines on a daily basis for more than 15 days each month. This is a serious condition that can have a huge impact on a person’s quality of life.

Migraines are a type of primary headache, which means they are a condition that is not caused by illness or injury. Migraines will often run in families and people with epilepsy can experience them as part of their condition. The most common cause of chronic migraine is the overuse of medication, but depression, anxiety, stress, and disturbed sleep can also trigger migraines. For some people, migraines can be triggered by specific foods or medication, hormones or bright lights and/or noises.

Chronic Migraine Treatment

If someone experiences migraines for more than 15 days a month for a three-month period, they may be diagnosed with chronic migraines and preventative treatment may be necessary in addition to treatment to relieve the symptoms and prevent migraines in the future. There are lots of medications that can help people with migraines and our team will be able to prescribe the best solution for your condition.

Medication can also be combined with other forms of therapy such as therapeutic massage. Therapeutic massage can be an effective way to treat migraines as it can reduce the tension and stress which can trigger a migraine. Massage also promotes relaxation by easing tension in your layers of muscle and improving circulation. Treatment for migraines can also include neuromodulation therapy, which applies small pulses of electricity to the nerves. Chiropractic care can also be beneficial in the treatment of migraines.

Our board-certified doctors and licensed therapists can also help you to identify ways in which you can adapt your lifestyle to minimize potential triggers which could be worsening your migraine headache pain. This could include eating a healthy diet without food or drinks that worsen symptoms, getting enough sleep, avoiding sources of stress and anxiety, improving posture and getting regular exercise.

At Icon Medical Centers in South Florida, we are committed to helping people who are living with incapacitating migraines through expert and compassionate treatment.
